    One of the most efficient ways to give back to your environment is through supporting the production of recycled ink and toner cartridges. Ink cartridges are made of plastic. This plastic is composed of engineering grade polymers. These polymers can take anywhere from 450-1000 years to decompose. It takes even longer when that same cartridge is in a landfill. Cartridges that are recycled don’t end up in the landfill. By purchasing recycled ink, you are supporting the elimination of an immense waste (the US has about 75,000 tons of ink cartridges that are trashed every year. That’s 300 million cartridges!). Also, it takes less energy and resources to create a recycled cartridge than to create a brand new one. So not only does buying recycled ink rid us of waste, it also saves energy.

    Creating an ink cartridge uses not only energy, but oil. An average sized ink cartridge uses around 3.5 oz. of oil to create. A laser printer takes more than three quarts of oil to produce. As we all know oil is not a renewable resource. There is a finite supply that will one day run out. Since the process of recycling ink does not require the production of a new cartridge, oil is saved. In fact, an estimated amount of 11 million gallons of oil could be saved in seven months through cartridge recycling. We use oil in creating all kinds of goods in our society (tires, plastic, fuel, office supplies, etc), so any reduction of oil use would be beneficial to our society and environment.

    Through ink and toner cartridge recycling, 40,000 tons of plastic and metal are saved from landfills, yearly. Studies have shown that for every 10,000 cartridges recycled: 960kg of aluminum, 8,000lbs of plastic, and 100,000 liters of oil are saved. By preventing these materials ending up in landfills, we eliminate the air and water pollution derived from landfills. Also, by buying recycled cartridges, you are preventing the waste and pollution associated with making entirely new cartridges in mass-produced factories.

    Up to 97% of the materials in a printer cartridge can recycled. By recycling these cartridges we completely reduce the need for raw materials. This is supremely beneficial to the environment, as well as increases the amount of resources at hand. Even though this small step of recycling could do so much, 50% of all toner cartridges and 70% of all ink cartridges are still not recycled. They end up polluting our environment for us and our children, and if nothing changes they will even contaminate the environment fo your children’s children. Do your part for our world.
